Meet the Directors - Jon Cutress

We are very proud of our Board of Directors who bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and creativity to our business.

This week we’d like to introduce you to our Finance Director, Jon Cutress. Jon looks after all the financial affairs of the company, ensuring appropriate controls are in place and providing general support to the senior management team and the business as a whole.

What is your role?
I am the Finance Director, responsible for the overall financial stewardship of our company. The role is very ‘hands-on’ and includes day-to-day routine finance processes, compliance matters, communicating our current financial performance and assisting with strategy.
What inspired you to become a Chartered Accountant?
Before becoming articled in 1980 I knew nothing about accountancy or the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) since back in the day careers counselling and guidance was pretty much non-existent. On graduation (with a Geography degree) all I knew was that I (1) wanted to work in London (2) gain a professional qualification and (3) have some fun. Although I’ve never really planned anything in terms of a career path, I’ve studied hard, worked hard and taken advantage of opportunities as and when they’ve presented themselves.
What do you like most about working for Canham Consulting?
We have a great mix of people here that I love working with. Everyone in the company is focused on delivering a quality service, with an enduring legacy, to so many different people and organisations.
Tell us about your career to date.
When I started out in practice most of my clients were in the entertainment industry in one form or another; as a result I met very some interesting people and had some great times both in and out of work. A few years post-qualification I decided to expand my horizons and joined the head office of a large multinational Wines and Spirits company. Although working very long hours one of the many perks was being on the product development panel - there were some very strange concoctions and blends most of which luckily never made it to market! I relocated to Norfolk in 1988, and after a couple of years with a local company I re-joined my previous employer as General Manager at a newly acquired bottling plant and subsequently was asked to join their project team setting up sales, marketing and distribution operations in post-communist Warsaw, Prague and Budapest; working in Eastern Europe was very interesting – and at times challenging! Since then, I’ve held a variety of roles in a variety of sectors including cement, retail and high-tech, for a number of East Anglian companies, with two secondments to the USA, before arriving at Canhams in 2014.
What keeps you busy outside of work?
In one word, horses. I love the routine, physical activity and bond that comes from keeping horses, although sometimes I need reminding of that when outside in sub-zero temperatures, soaked to the skin and wading through mud.  As an added bonus I get to play with tractors and paddock maintenance equipment! On a slightly smaller scale two black labs, and on an even smaller scale, chickens also have calls on my time.
