We are very proud of our Board of Directors who bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and creativity to our business.
This week we’d like to introduce you to Nigel Evans. Nigel is the Director responsible for our Property & Construction team, as well as a Structural Engineer working daily on designs for a wide range of projects.
Director - Property & Construction
What is your role?
I am the Director responsible for our Property & Construction team, working with structural engineers, surveyors and technicians to deliver projects to our clients. I’m also a structural engineer working daily on designs for a wide range of projects, in various sectors.
What do you love most about working for Canham Consulting?
I’ve been with Canham Consulting since 2003, and it really is the people that make the business.
I love being around like-minded colleagues and every single person offers something valuable to the team. Overall, it’s a great team ethos that I’m proud to be a part of.
What is a typical day like for you?
One of the things I love about this job is the variety I get to experience. We work on such a wide range of projects, in many different sectors in the Property & Construction team that I can be designing a modest internal alteration for a private client one day, and out on site up to my knees in mud the next! We’re here to deliver to our clients, and I relish the variety of work and the challenges that this presents.
What are your qualifications and what route did you take to get to this position?
After completing my A-levels, I started out as a Draughtsman at a precast concrete manufacturer, designing and detailing reinforced concrete elements. My employer supported me through college one day a week. At this point, I had very little experience but was fortunate to work with an excellent mentor who taught me invaluable lessons about the industry. My mentor helped grow my interest and gave me a clear idea of the direction I wanted to take my career.
I’m a true believer that hard work pays off. I gained a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Civil Engineering on a day release college course and later, in 2008, I was elected into the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) as a Technician Member. I’m currently working towards becoming an Associate Member.
What keeps you busy outside of work?
I’ve played various sports since I was a youngster, with hockey being my main passion. I’m very much looking forward to playing again in the near future, once current restrictions are eased. Injury and age ended my regular league participation years ago, so now I play for fun as part of a veteran’s team in an attempt to keep my fitness levels up! Mostly, it’s my young family that keeps me busy away from work and we enjoy going to the beach and for long walks in the countryside at the weekends. I’m also a fan of DIY and have taken on many a lockdown project! I love a bit of flat pack furniture, which perhaps comes from my day job, and the fascination with how things go together!
