He is team leader for the Design Team and has recently been preparing to become an Associate Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers. He sat the exam on the 27th September and there will be an interview date to follow. He will receive his results back in early 2022.
Hi Jack, what made you want to become an Engineer?
I was watching Extreme Engineering on Discovery channel when I was around 13 years old, and the episode was about the Millau Viaduct. The engineer was being interviewed about how it was designed and how it was being built, and I was interested to learn more.
What made you want to gain this qualification?
Having the accreditation will be a nice achievement for myself to feel proud of and will give my clients peace of mind that they are in the best hands.
What is involved in the exam?
The exam is 7 hours long and I will have to design an entire building, sketch key details and show how it will be built. This will be followed by an interview with other members of I Struct E about my career and knowledge of engineering. For the interview, I will produce a portfolio that will demonstrate my ability in 13 core objectives.
How are you being supported by the team at Canham?
Rob Panter has been mentoring me and has provided plenty of support and encouragement. We have weekly sessions in the office to review previous exam papers, discuss the options and dissect the answers. I also revise at home multiple times a week and have attempted a few past papers which Rob has reviewed and provided constructive feedback to help me succeed. All questions I have are valid and swiftly answered. It can be quite difficult at times, but it is very enjoyable. Rob is very knowledgeable, and it is encouraging to listen and learn more.
Once you have achieved this qualification, what do you want to do next?
Once I have achieved Associate membership I aim to work towards Chartered Membership. This follows a similar process and will build on my portfolio.
